Cardiac endocarditis?

I get the basis of this infection (the bacteria, the possible side effects, the treatment) but can someone tell me a bit more about the prognosis and how the treatment actually effects the patient (can iv antib's be administrated at home)? My friend has just had diagnosis and I will be the shoulder to cry on and support him so want to be well armed.
