How to stop toddler from heading!?

Someone already asked this question on here but every answer was geared towards heading objects (wall, floor etc) but my little rascal heads us! Both myself, husband and older son have suffered the wrath of Elijah's heads on the forehead & nose and he hits hard! We pull him away and tell him to stop because it hurts but he just cries because he got scolded. He's just about 2 and has been doing this for a few months now. Any usefull tips (other than heading him back!)?
